She currently serves as Clinical Associate Professor of Dance at the University at Buffalo, where she teaches ballet, contemporary dance, choreography, dance on film, and graduate coursework while mentoring emerging artists through performance, research, and interdisciplinary collaboration. In addition to her teaching, Zavrel serves as Artistic Director of ChoreoLab and served as Managing Director of Zodiaque Dance Company. Through these leadership roles, she has created opportunities for students to engage in creative research, performance, production, and collaborative artistic processes that bridge academic study and professional practice. As a performer, Zavrel has worked with a variety of choreographers, directors, and companies throughout her career, experiences that continue to inform her teaching, creative research, and mentorship of emerging artists. Her choreography and screendance films have been presented nationally and internationally, with screenings, exhibitions, and festival selections spanning more than ten countries. Her award-winning film Transmigration received recognition for Best Choreography and a nomination for Best Direction, while additional works, including SILO and She Told, have been featured at international festivals, conferences, and exhibitions. Her films have been screened as part of the Women in Dance Leadership Conference and internationally in Yokohama, Japan. Her creative research frequently explores themes of memory, identity, transformation, and human connection through movement and visual storytelling. Prior to joining the University at Buffalo in 2017, Zavrel taught at SUNY Potsdam, SUNY Geneseo, Florida State University, and a variety of professional training programs. Her commitment to teaching is grounded in the belief that dance education extends beyond technical training to include artistic inquiry, critical thinking, collaboration, and creative autonomy. A passionate advocate for dance education, Zavrel’s writing has appeared in Dance Teacher Magazine, where she has authored articles exploring dance pedagogy, motherhood, resilience, and the realities of sustaining a career in the arts. Her recent work, including articles addressing teaching dance after miscarriage and navigating a career in dance while parenting, has contributed to broader conversations surrounding wellness, mentorship, and the evolving role of educators within the field. Through both her teaching and writing, she seeks to support artists in developing sustainable, meaningful, and authentic creative lives. She is deeply committed to student mentorship and preparing artists for meaningful and sustainable careers in dance. Her former students have gone on to perform with the Radio City Rockettes, appear in Broadway productions including Hamilton and On Your Feet!, tour nationally and internationally, dance alongside artists such as Olivia Rodrigo, pursue graduate study, and assume leadership roles throughout the field.
